German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
Someone on Criegslist is selling and wants me to make an offer. I have no idea what they are worth, any ballpark figures?

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
This would be my first gun purchase, I like the idea of having a private transaction, but will either of these guns serve me well. I never hear you guys talk about them here.

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
Can't help you with the Mauser, but as for the M-44, here's the best price I've seen.... http://www.classicarms.us/htm/firearms.htm - look about 3/4 down the page.
Also, I saw a couple M-44s at a gun show this weekend. One had the old, hardwood stock, and the other had the laminated stock. Both dealers were asking $150. You probably realize that the prices from Classic Arms won't include shipping, and you can probably add on anywhere from $20 to $50 for the FFL fee. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
Both bolt actions will serve you well. The Mauser is held in higher regard to the Mosin.
Have you read Bison Survival Blog? Long and short of it is that the author says that a military bolt action in a non-standard calibre will serve the frugal survivalist well. You'll go through less ammo and the ammo will be cheaper so it is easier to stockpile. This has been borne out by the increase in the price of 308. Also a military bolt action will take a licking and keep on ticking. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
M44 can be had at Big5 on sale for 79 bucks. I bought a Polish M44 with a very nice bore and 440 rounds of surplus ammo in original tin for $150 delivered to my house by seller. Search youtube with M44, you get some pretty good vids.

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
I don't have any info on the Mauser, but as for Mosin Nagant, I own two M91/30's. These are the same caliber and same basic design, except the M44 is shorter (it's a carbine) and (I believe) has an attached bayonet. From what I understand the M44 a little heavier, louder, and more muzzle flash than the M91/30. That being said, I love my Mosin Nagants. They are 7.62x54R caliber (which can still be had at surplus for reasonable prices, just make sure you clean your rifle well after shooting). They make a Big-Badda-Boom, and they shoot straight, even with me pulling the trigger. Good, heavy duty firearms. I picked them up for $80 each at Big 5 on sale.

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
I dont own one anymore but feel like the mauser was the best gun i have ever
owned 8mm would like to purchase another. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
I'd offer him 200 for the pair. I'd pay 250. Then again, I'm not all that hyped on either, so you might pay a little more if you are.
The Mauser is by far the better rifle. If you do get them, you might sell one and buy another to match the one you keep. Remember the rule of twos: two is one, one is none. It would be a shame to put back 10k of 7.62x54R and then, after the poo hits the propeller, have a firing pin break, and then that ammo is useless because you didn't pick up an extra rifle for 75 bucks. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
If the Mauser is made in Germany during the deuce, it's worth more than $300. If made anywhere else, $150 would be a reasonable price. I saw in American Rifleman that they were selling "Mitchell's Mausers" for about $299. Those were new also (meaning unissued).
Plus, the 8mm is a wonderful caliber and fairly inexpensive to shoot. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
:rolleyes_m: Hmmm...I own more than a couple of both.
Generic run of the mill 8mm-K98 Mauser in good condition...$200.00 Generic run of the mill 7.62x54R-Mosin Nagant Model 44 in good condition...$100.00 Be advised there are differences in price depending on what area of the US you live in. I'd say offer him $200.00 for both and see if he bites. :D Otherwise, you might be buying a pig in a bag and won't know it until you shoot some ammo through both of them. We could get into a huge debate concerning the fine points of each rifle and nobody would win. I've killed wild boar and deer with both and prefer the Mosin M44 Carbine over the Mausers because it's just easier to handle for hunting purposes. If I wanted to play sniper and whack some bad guys from 400 yards away the Mauser would be the definite tool of choice. Mosin Nagant variants of mass produced Dragunov sniper models do exist and certified kills were made at 1,000 yards quite easily circa Enemy At The Gates :>)...so they aren't too shabby when compared to the Mausers. I have one Mosin Nagant Model 38 that will shoot 1.25 inch groups at 100 yards with heavy ball ammo, but that's a little exceptional for any Mosin. Your results may vary...every gun has it's own personality. I actually prefer the 7.62x54R over the 8mm because it's basically a twin to the tried and true .308,but that's just me. Good luck...make the guy an offer. :rolleyes_m::D:rolleyes_m: |

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
I honestly prefer the Mosin to the mauser... especially with new and improved 7.62x54r rounds being developed... I expect more 7.62x54r milsurp to hit the market because the ruskies are developing new and improved AP rounds and regular ball rounds because of increase in body armor on the modern battle field.
8mm milsurp is gone. Whats here is here, there will be no more. There will be milsurp (not as cheap as before probably) for decades to come with 7.62x54r. FWIW I own two mosins and 2 mausers... I like them all, but my fav is the mosin... it also shoots teh same ammo as my wife dragonov, so whats not to love? |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44

Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
MN's can be a hell of a good deal, IF you can hand select them. A couple of years ago, my dealer had a large lot of M38's, M44's and some 91/30's, I looked over every rifle, checked the rifling, bore condition, stock before choosing a M38. I wish there were some 91/30's in better shape, none of them were armory reconditioned. Next time, hopefully.
A couple of good MN's with a stockpile of 7.62x54R is a smart investment! |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
You can have M44s from most shops for $80-$90 all day long around here.
Last one I bought I got for $50 because it had a busted sear, but the replacement part only cost $10. (If you need Mosin parts Tennessee Gun parts is your friend) Mausers can go from $100-$400 for a decent rifle depending on who made it and where. They are arguably better rifles, and certainly have better triggers. |
Re: German Mauser and Mosin Nagant m-44
:rolleyes_m: +1 on the ammo observation.
8mm has become scarce and with escalating ammo costs it has nowhere to go but UP. :bear_w00t::bear_w00t::bear_w00t: Milsurp 7.62x54R is still available and probably will be indefinitely with something like 18 million Mosin Nagant rifles still scattered all over the globe and still capable of some serious destruction. Present day Russian machine guns still use the 7.62x54R as we speak and from what I've saw and heard from the guys who spent some time in Afghanistan they are bad to the bone. A lot of the guys I spoke with said some of the hard core freedom fighters still carried Mosin Nagants because 7.62x39 for their AK's was hard to come by,while 7.62x54R ammo was always available. A lot of factors make the MN's a better choice from an ammo availability and cost angle than the tried and true Mauser's. Both are nice, deadly guns and still affordable... Here's good info link if you want to know more about them: http://russian-mosin-nagant.com/mamb...smf&Itemid=105 |
